Work Lays-Off and How They Are How Affecting People

Since the entering the new year we have heard the news of massive lays off from major companies such as Meta (Facebook), Twitter, Amazon, most recently David's Bridal who just laid off 9,236 positions across the United Sates and filed for Bankruptcy. Also, Bed Bath and Beyond has filed for bankruptcy and all stores are set to close. Forbes has 2023 Layoff Tracker tracking and updating companies who are laying off employees.

According to USA Today since the start of the year, 297 tech companies laid off nearly 95,000 workers, according to data compiled by Layoffs.fyi, a website that's been tracking tech layoffs since March 2020. If that rate continues, the industry could cut more than 900,000 jobs in 2023. That's nearly six times the total for the industry in 2022, according to the site.

Speaking of companies lays-off and cuts back. Recently the local Staples retail store in area of Pineville, NC has gotten order from their corporate office that the store hours being reduced which means less money is going into employee pockets and harder to get new employees through the door. I spoke with Winter who is the Operations Supervisor of the store in Pineville, NC and this what she had to say about the new hours.

(Me and Winter; Operations Supervisor At My Store Visit)

"I took a pay cut coming to this store. I come from the shoe retail industry, I was a general store manager for Rack Room Shoes for over 10 years and I wanted a change and I saw this as an opportunity to come and learn new skills and sometimes I am only one working the floor because we have nobody else".

For those of you who do not know who and what Staples Retail is, they sell office supplies, business machines, and tech services, Staples also offers a copy and print center for photocopies, digital printing, faxing, custom business cards, custom rubber stamps, promotional products, binding, lamination, folding, cutting and engraved products.

Winter also expressed how she wished they had more help because it hard to get the freight out when there is only one person working the floor and there is a truck of supplies coming every of Tuesday and can you only get out so much a day while trying to help customers at the same.

(They granted me access to come behind customer service and take a photo. They only have 1 cashier)

I was also able to speak with the store general manager Rabin who also share some insight on the come back on the store. He stated "It's been hard try to keep people here and get people here because of number 1.. the pay and now I am having to take the little bit of employees I have and shift to departments and that did not sign up for just so that we as a team can take care of customers. I would like to see for my store to have a number of 12- 15 employees but for right now I do not see that happening".

According to CNBC research "As people set resolutions for 2023, there's one goal at the top of many lists: quitting an unfulfilling job. Nearly half (46%) of U.S. workers plan to look for a new job in the next six months, citing low pay as their No.1 reason for eyeing greener pastures".

Rabin also stated that he works open to close because of the cut back on store hours. He works form 9-9:30 am in the morning until 7:00 pm when they close.

When it take a look at what is going on in 2023 it's not just lays off that are going on but major companies are filing for bankruptcy and companies like Staples are cutting back on store hours makes you wonder what is happening to the economy.
