The good city of Rock Hill, South Carolina is showing its effort to decrease the statistics on the hunger and needy families with the Rock Hill Community Fridge. The Rock Hill Community Fridge is a fridge full of free food for the community. With the goal of eradicating food waste and insecurity, the fridge aims at using food that would be otherwise thrown away.
Brittany Kelly who is the owner of the Mercantile store in down Rock Hill created and establish the community fridge who help those in need 24/7. The idea came from two young sisters, Aubrey and Amelia Johnson, who approached Kelly and her husband about the prospect of starting the community fridge. They wanted to see it come true in the City of Rock Hill.
Kelly stated “The community fridge is something we have located outside of the store and is exactly what it sounds like, we are open 24/7 for you to drop off food or take food and it’s not just for the homeless population,” Kelly also stated "She has a lot of community members, Rock Hill residents, and regular volunteers to come clean the fridge and stock it as necessary".
The fridge has also seen an increase in the number of items donated, as it has been promoted on Facebook and Instagram. Some things Kelly recommend donating are single dosed sized things like cheese sticks, apple sauce, canned goods are always great, deli meat, bread, eggs, milk, water bottles are a huge one, because so many people just need some water, Fresh produce, fruit, vegetables, bread and juice are other recommended items, but people can also donate personal items, such as feminine products, tampons or condoms.
Employees at the Mercantile say it’s exciting to see how the community has responded to support the project. Emily who is an employee at the Mercantile stated she has seen a lot of people come by to donate and even grab something to eat. She also stated that she has seen a lot of the local college students come by.
Rock Hill Community Fridge has definitely impacted the community in a very great way. The Rock Hill Community Fridge is available 24 hours a day for individuals to pick up, but also drop off food items, as needed.
