3-2-1 DASH FOR DOWN SYNDROME WITH GREATER CHARLOTTE, NC!

On Saturday, March 18th, 2023 Down Syndrome Association of Greater Charlotte hosted their annual 3-2-1 Dash for Down Syndrome 5-K Race. Runners, volunteers, and community members came to help and support this honorable cause. The 3-2-1 DASH for Down Syndrome is a 5K fundraiser; run an extra .11 mile to the 2nd finish line for a 3.21 finish!

The Down Syndrome Association of Greater Charlotte (DSAGC) is a non-profit, family support organization. The goal of the DSA of Greater Charlotte and its families is to enable individuals with Down syndrome (Ds) to reach their full potential and become respected members of their community. The DSAGC provides day and overnight camps for youth and adults with Ds, virtual learning series and workshops, social outings, and provides resources for families and individuals to connect with the community to best meet their needs.

Most people have 2 copies of 23 different chromosomes but individuals with Down Syndrome are born with 3 copies of the 21st chromosome (the medical term for this is Trisomy 21). That’s it only one chromosome difference. So for awareness & support, DSAGC added to their 5K (3.1 miles) run a short DASH (0.11 mile) for Down syndrome for a total distance of 3.21 miles which is very smart and impressive!

Victoria Coles who is one of the organizers for this event stated "The event is all about making those with Down Syndrome feel special. We come together for one purpose, to serve our awesome kids that have down syndrome and make sure they have as much inclusion as possible".

World Down Syndrome Day lands on March 21st of every year. Which means everyone should come together and celebrate to include an community that is over looked.
